I Started at Joe's because I wanted a challenge - June 2011

With all challenges , if you persevere the rewards come. After a few months training I noticed my clothes felt looser, my body stronger and an overwhelming improvement in my self confidence. Physical gains can be found in any exercise program , however it is the social atmosphere at Joe's that makes it so addictive. Whether it is watching and talking while the sparring is on or just supporting each other during training, it is the people you meet and the friendships you develop that makes training at Joe's enjoyable. I don't know what my future in boxing is. I might do a few fights  for experience or I may take it to a more competitive level or I may just keep training for the fitness benefits, this is the beauty of the versatile nature of Joe's. I know that whichever path I take Joe and and the team will support me - Rachel

When I first came to Joe's Gym - February 2011

When I first came to Joe's Gym about a month ago I never imagined to get where I am now. I am so grateful for having been offered this unique and great opportunity and the incredible support that goes with it.  Thankyou to Joe and everyone involved - Nadine A 2011 women's open 69kg NSW State champion voted best female of the tournament.

Maybe too long and over the top, but it's the truth! - August 1st 2010

Back in the day when I was about ten years old, there was no Internet, Foxtel or dedicated sports channels to quench my thirst for boxing. Boxing was just something that I heard about on news flashes, or whenmy dad would read an article in the news paper about how Mike Tyson just became the heavyweight champion or how Kostya Tzyu just lost to Vince Phillips for the first time in his career.  All I had were these brief flashes and an imagination to fill that void; maybe that’s what started me on the wrong path that eventuated to me becoming a drug addict and alcoholic by the time I was twenty years old.  Well, it was either that or the fact that I had no outlet as a youngster – nothing to occupy me; sure, not being able to watch boxing was something that I could tolerate and wasn’t exactly life changing – you could even go so far as to say that I am being melodramatic, but my parents, I think, inadvertently contributed to this negative path that I ended up on by not allowing me to practice boxing or any other type of martial art that I was passionate about because they were scared that I would ‘get hurt’. But that’s all in the past now, and even though it has basically taken me almost twelve years to rid myself of the terrible vices that that I plunged myself  deep into, I am now in a state where I feel I have full control of my life.  Being a part of Joe’s Boxing Club is more than just a place where you can get a good work out, learn new things about boxing and make new friends; it’s a place where you can find your inner self and become part of a great culture that Joe has built. Whether you are serious about becoming a competitive fighter or just here to get fit, Joe’s Boxing will guide you down the right path and to that goal - Sargon Lazarr

 Didn't intend to start boxing

It wasn’t my intention to start boxing. Jack, my fourteen year old son was keen to learn and I initially went along purely as an observer. The first thing that impressed me about Joe’s was the culture. It was ego-less. Just a nice bunch of people from all sorts of backgrounds working out and learning new skills together. I took my wife along to ensure that she was comfortable with the idea of putting our son into boxing. She agreed that it was a healthy, supportive and well structured environment and had no problem in signing him up. The values that the club teaches -- respect, concentration, hard work -- promised to have a positive influence on our son during his teenage years.

After a few weeks of watching Jack from the sidelines, Joe tapped me on the shoulder and suggested that I should sign-up as well. Me? 48, overweight and unfit? He assured me that I would be fine so I jumped in and gave it a go.

A couple of months in and I am addicted. It is an enormous amount of fun learning the fundamentals of this unique sport: how to throw a proper punch, how to stand, how to balance, how to duck and weave, how move the shoulders and hips fluidly. There seems no end to what there is to learn.

And the fitness! I have lost 8 kilos in two months since taking up boxing and my aerobic fitness and strength is returning to levels that I have not enjoyed since my twenties.

I cannot speak more highly of Joe’s and strongly recommend it to anyone who gets a buzz out of personal achievement and physical activity. As for a teenager, it is hard to imagine a better place to teach a boy to become a man.

Every one of the boys absolutely LOVED it -  well done!!!!
It isn’t easy to enthuse some 15 year old boys – they are too cool for anything without some element of danger, but not old enough to take on more adult-based activities, so they are left in an x-box limbo land. Surprisingly, they loved the discipline and going the extra mile with fitness, as well as learning more specific boxing skills. Really convenient that groups of siblings three years apart in age could all attend the same place at the same time, too, as that rarely happens. Your classes were judged to be one of the best things they have ever done, or in the boys’ words: “HECTIC!”, “”SICK!” and “COOL!”...  - Kerry july 2010

Greetings from Port Moresby

Just to let you know that I have picked up the package.......Thank you so very much, I really appreciate what you have sent. These are things that the club needs badly, and Im sure the boxers now will become
better fighters in the competition. Our boys are doing very well in the comp and I will get Jason to send you some photos of that shortly. We've got about six boxers (4boys and 2 girls) who have been selected for the training squad, but we will know by the end of next month on who is confirmed. Alot of our boxers, both male and female are new in the ring, so they are now getting the feel for it, and the coach
told me that the more fights they have, they'll improve......  Vicky M Wildlife Boxing PNG August 2009

Thank you so much for all your help......As I have always said only God will bless you mightyly for all the help you are giving us. Wildlife boxers are having heavy training, as I told them that because we will be
hosting the competition next weekend, I want them to give the other fighters, very good fights. And I expect them to win most fights - Vicky M Wildlife Boxing PNG June 2010

Joes boxing – Anna’s testimonial

When I started at Joes Boxing my intentions were to improve my fitness and tone up. I play several team sports and wanted something that would challenge me physically on a different level, although I had no intention of competing. What I didn’t realise was what a positive affect it would have on other aspects of my life.

Yes the physical benefits have been great - my overall fitness, strength and stamina have improved significantly. But it is the emotional benefits that I have found most rewarding and unexpected.

Joe and the team are really supportive and I was surprised by how fast I got involved in sparring and other activities which I thought I would never have the confidence to do. This confidence has extended into other aspects of my life and since starting boxing I feel happier and relaxed – it’s is a great stress reliever. It has also helped me to become more disciplined, assertive and focused – all of which have had a positive impact on my work, study and personal relationships.

I have been coming for six months now and although I am still undecided about competing, my expectations have already been exceeded and so who knows what the future holds! I would highly recommend Joes Boxing to anyone!
